Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are usually performed by Registered Dental Hygienists. Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:
Removal of calculus (built ups): Calculus is hardened dental plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. It can be supra gingival (above the gum) or infra gingival(below the gum). It can’t be removed by home tooth brushing. It can only be removed with special dental instrument used by the professional hygienist or the dentist.
Removal of dental plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria can start a cavity in the tooth, or/and produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums. This gum inflammation is called gingivitis as long as it is confined to the soft tissue. If it spreads to the alveolar bone, it is called periodontitis.
Teeth polishing:
Remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling, it is very important the tooth surface is smooth so it doesn’t retain dental plaque easily.
Fluoride application:
Topical fluoride is a great preventive way against tooth decay. At Motivo dental we use fluoride for our patients after professional tooth cleaning.
