Different Types of Dentures

Dentures are removable or fixed replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. Today, we have different types of dentures that are modern, natural looking and effective. The temporary dentures take a few weeks and several appointments to customize as per the patient’s need. They are made out of plastic, metal, or both. Dentures can be broadly categorized into two types: complete dentures and partial dentures.

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures or full dentures consists are used as a replacement for both the upper and lower sets of teeth. They are mainly used when all natural teeth are lost. Complete dentures are further classified as conventional and immediate.

Conventional Complete Dentures

Conventional complete dentures are made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissues begin to heal. The denture is then readily placed in the mouth about 8 to 12 weeks after teeth removal.

Immediate Complete Dentures

Unlike conventional dentures, immediate dentures are made in advance and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed. As a result, the wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period.

However, conventional dentures are recommended for successful results compared to immediate dentures.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures or bridges are attached to a gum-colored plastic base. This is connected by a metal framework that holds the denture in place for better bite force.
